What to Do About Pet Damaged Carpet in Your Apartment

When you have pets, accidents are bound to happen. You don’t hold it against them, but your landlord might. If your pets have done a number on your carpets but you’re still looking to get your deposit back, here’s what you can do.

Old Stains

Sometimes pet accidents result in stubborn stains. When it comes time to move out, it's important to take the time to tackle any lingering stains. You can start by creating a DIY cleaning solution by mixing dish soap or laundry detergent with hot water into a spray bottle. Spray the stained area lightly with the mixture and allow it to set for 10 minutes. Then, blot the stain with a rag. Sprinkle baking soda over the spot to deodorize and soak up any remaining liquid. Repeat the process as necessary.

Bald Spots

It’s not uncommon for pets to claw and dig at carpets, especially when you’re away for the day. Repairing a bald spot is a little trickier than getting rid of a stain, but it can be done. The good news is that you don’t have to pay for the entire carpet to be replaced. The answer is to patch just the one area. This can be tricky if your apartment doesn’t really have any inconspicuous places to pull carpet from, but you may be able to ask your landlord if they have any leftover piles.

If you’re not able to find a donor piece of carpet around your apartment, you can try to find a match from your local carpet supplier. Just take a picture of your carpet and bring it with you to the store. It may be tricky to pin down an exact match, but you should be able to find something that’s passing enough.

Once you have your donor carpet, use a utility knife and cut out the damaged piece of carpet. After that, lay down some carpet tape and place the new piece of carpet.

Making a patch look seamless does take a bit of skill. If you want to increase your odds of getting your deposit back after you move, Ft. Collins Carpet Repair can help. Give us a call today for a free evaluation!
